DAY 1

Itinerary day 1:
Pick up from your hotel in Alice Springs is usually arranged for approx 7.30am.

First a visit to Flynn’s grave in its picturesque setting below Mt Gillen, then on to Standley Chasm for an exploration of this famous landmark, and morning tea.

Ellery Creek Big Hole is the next stop, and this suits a swim in summer, and a delightful walk around the Dolomite trail for other times of the year. Back onto Namatjira drive to call into the Ochre Pits, where you can use all your imagination about the ancient ceremonial traditions of the Western Arrente people on the Aboriginal cultural heritage walk.

Now it is time to drive to Glen Helen Resort’s Homestead for lunch and Gorge walk.

After lunch, an informative drive to Ormiston Gorge, and nearby points of interest such as the amazing mound springs, Artist Henk Guth’s grave facing Mount Sonder, a cruise along the Finke River, finishing with Mt Sonder lookout.

Return to Glen Helen approximately 4-5pm for a 3 course dinner in Namatjira Gallery Restaurant and overnight motel accommodation.

DAY 2

Itinerary day 2:
Start the day with a Continental Breakfast at Glen Helen, prepare to depart Glen Helen 7.30 am.

Follow Namatjira Drive west, and marvel at the morning sunlight on Mount Sonder. Before long you will reach the Davenport creek, which is ‘our road’ to Roma Gorge. Enjoy the Four wheel driving through Glen Helen Station, and see what the country was all like in the days after settlement but before the West MacDonnell National Park was declared.

Now prepare for a treat. Roma Gorge has the only known Aboriginal Rock Art in the West MacDonnell Ranges. You can wander around admiring these amazing petroglyphs – carved who knows how long ago.

Now for more fun Four wheel driving through the station country, to Gosse Bluff, or Tnorala where you can see and walk amongst the impact crater formed by a comet, and learn about the Aboriginal legends of the region.

Next on to Hermannsburg to enjoy the Heritage Precinct, with its wonderful old Mission Buildings and fascinating history.

Your Picnic Lunch will be at Palm Valley, followed by a walk along the Valley of the Palms itself. The time will then come to begin the return journey to Alice Springs, and your accommodation, by approximately 6pm.
