Two Day Glen Helen Tour

Location: West MacDonnell National Park

$750 AUD

Description

The two day tour takes in all that the West MacDonnell and Finke Gorge National Parks have to offer.

Itinerary Day One

Pick up from your hotel in Alice Springs is usually arranged for Approximately 7:30am.

First a visit to Flynn’s Grave in it’s picturesque setting below Mt Gillen, then on to Standley Chasm for an exploration of this famous landmark and a stop for morning tea.

Ellery Creek Big Hole is the next stop, this suits a swim in the warmer months or a delightful walk around the Dolomite trail for other times of the year. Back onto Namatjira Drive to call next at the historically rich Ocher Pits where you can use your imagination about the ancient ceremonial traditions of the Western Arrente People on the Aboriginal Cultural Heritage walk.

From here we complete the short drive back to Glen Helen Homestead for lunch followed by a walk down to Glen Helen Gorge.

After lunch an informative drive to Ormiston Gorge and nearby points of interest such as the amazing Mound Springs, Artist Henk Huth’s grave facing Mount Sonder, a cruise along the finke river then finishing with the Mount Sonder Lookout.

Returning to Glen Helen Homestead around 4-5pm you can relax in your ensuite motel room, take in the sunset view from our back veranda, enjoy your 3 course dinner in The Namatjira Gallery Restaurant and if it’s the right night for it enjoy the sounds of our talented live musicians.

Itinerary Day Two

Starting your day with breakfast in the homestead we will depart Glen Helen at 7:30am. Early enough to marvel at the morning sunlight over Mount Sonder as we follow Namatjira Drive to the West. Before long we reach the Davenport Creek which is ‘our road’ to Roma Gorge. Enjoy the four wheel drive experience through Glen Helen Station and see what the land was like in the days of the original settlement before the West MacDonnell National Park was declared.

This rocky road takes us to Roma Gorge, home of the only known Aboriginal Rock Art in The West MacDonnell Ranges. Take your time to wander and admirer the amazing Petroglyphs – carved who knows how long ago!

Now for more four wheel drive fun through station country and on to Gosse Bluff, or Tnorala where you can see and walk among the impact crater formed by a comet and learn about the Aboriginal legends of the area.

Next on to Hermannsburg to enjoy the Heritage Precinct with it’ wonderful old mission buildings and fascinating history.

Your picnic lunch will be at Palm Valley, followed by a walk along the Valley of Palms itself. Marvel at the wonder of palm varieties found only in this area.

We then begin the return journey to Alice Springs arriving at your accommodation at approximately 6pm

We arrived from the west, so the place felt like the middle of nowhere, but really it is only 45 minutes easy drive from Alice Springs. The staff were friendly and helpful; the room was cozy but small and not real flash, however this is an unpretentious place and the value was there. We were amazed to find a terrific restaurant here and had a fabulous meal which would be worth driving out from Alice for, even if you weren’t staying over. Thoroughly recommended. PS Please ask the tour bus operators not to de-stone their dual wheels in front of the bowser!

Of all the places we stayed during our one week trip around Alice Springs this is the only place I would love to go back to. I do not care that there is no television, no air con and pretty simple accommodation. The atmosphere is lovely and personal, there was a roaring fire and live music in the evening, a toy box in the reception area for children, old books and magazines and after days of eating over priced chewy pizzas the restaurant was like arriving in heaven! Proof that you can have nice food in a remote location – we were looking forward to dinner every night and enjoyed kangaroo, camel sausages and crocodile spring rolls matched with great Aussie wines. It was the one place we would have loved to have stayed longer – the images speak for themselves. Will be back for sure.

Loved it – great food in the outback!!!

Just a quick e-mail to say how much we enjoyed our recent stay at Glen Helen, such a stunning location, friendly atmosphere, super service and great food – and accommodation, while as advised was basic, we found it spotlessly clean and all we really needed was there for an overnight stop. The highlight was the Ormiston Gorge Helicopter flight, just jaw droppingly beautiful – I think the pilot thought our microphones weren’t working, when in fact we were just speechless!

Glen Helen Resort was one of our stops on our travels through the Outback. all hotels were pre-arranged and we didn’t really now what to expect. Glen Helen Resort was out first Outback stop along the red centre way, and provided us with a with a real outback feeling. The Resort is very simple, the rooms small and cozy, but very clean and the staff were really friendly and kind. The evening meal was superb, the music in the evening was very fitting and could be enjoyed outside on the patio as well. The sandwiches we got the next day to take with us were the best sandwiches we had all trip. All in all avery simple but very nice and authentic resort.
